A shrub forming dense clumps, or rarely a small tree, with many small white flowers and small, applelike fruit. Flowers 0.4 in (1 cm) wide; with five white rounded petals, fragrant. Fruit less than 0.4 in (1 cm) in diameter; like a tiny apple, shiny red, bitter, with several seeds. Height: 20 ft (6 m). Diameter: 4 in (10 cm).
Moist soils, in openings and clearings; in coniferous forests.
Alaska east to southwestern Mackenzie and south in mountains to central California and southern New Mexico, locally beyond; down to sea level in north; at 4,000-9,000 ft (1,219-2,743 m) in south.
