5 New Particles Discovered by Hadron Collider Could Open Up ‘Dark Sector of Physics'

Greatest cosmic mysteries could be solved

Cern’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the newest addition to the accelerator complex. Featuring 27 km rings made of superconducting magnets the LHC is huge.

Within the chambers, two particle beams collide from opposite directions at speeds close to the speed of light.
When the energy density collides, it causes the ordinary matter to melt. Melting into two parts called quarks and gluons. This melting helps scientists discern the different components of the two parts.

10,000 plus scientists and aeronautical engineers are working together to better understand fundamental physics.  These are the scientists who brought you the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The Higgs Boson or ‘God Particle’ is fundamental piece of the universe that has been missing. Essentially it gives matter mass.

And now, the team at CERN have discovered five new particles.


The five were excited states of Omega-c-zero. A particle with three quarks. Further investigation will help scientists understand how quarks and multi-quark states correlate.

This will help scientists understand more about the universe and quantum theory. The LHC is the largest international collaboration in history with 85 different countries working on the project.

The LHC has the capacity to explore “the dark sector of physics” such as dark matter, the earliest moments of the big bang and even parallel dimensions.
