Istanbul's Hagia Sophia: A disaster waiting to happen
Even before they have erected the first stone, Justinian’s architects are in trouble. They have miscalculated the load-bearing properties of their giant structural piers, and if they go ahead with their plans, the new church is in real danger of collapse. And that’s not all. Hagia Sophia is a disaster waiting to happen.
