Australians love their dogs. From the retriever to the blue heeler there is a furry friend for everyone. There’s definitely a reason they’re called man’s best friend.
Humans have maintained relationships with dogs for thousands of years. They’ve stuck with us through wars, migrations and collapses. Thought to be descended from South Asian wolves the domestic doggo is far from wild. Most domestic dogs would never survive in the wild (looking at you pugs and Chihuahuas).
Their closest wild relatives are wolves, foxes, jackals and dingos.
Although domestic dogs are far from wild, they do share some behaviours with their relatives. They defend and mark territory with urine and bury their bones for later just as they did in the wild.
The Australian canine population is about 4.8 million, 52 per cent of that are pure bred. That’s a lot of dogs (sorry cat lovers).
So which breed is Australia’s pick?
