For some, Islands are an exotic getaway but for others, it's a way of life. So what Islands of the world make our top ten list?

10. Sri Lanka

Why: For being the only known permanent home of a colony of blue whales and for its ancient Buddhist ruins, including the 5th-century citadel Sigiriya.

Why: Its home to the carnivorous marsupial Tasmanian Devil found nowhere else in the world.

Why: It is the most remote inhabited island in the world!

7. New Zealand

Why: For being the last major country to be settled by humans.

Why: It's famed for its archeological sites, including some 900 monumental statues, called Moai, created by its early Rapa Nui inhabitants during the 10th-16th centuries.
