Egypt has launched a major project to uncover the secrets of the pyramids, using new technologies to examine construction techniques and search for hidden chambers.
The ‘Scan Pyramids’ project will include a search of four of the famed Pharaonic monuments using cosmic ray detectors, 3D laser scans and infrared thermography.
Leading scientists and architects from around the world will map two pyramids at Giza and two Dahshur pyramids, south of Cairo.
“The idea is to find the solution to the mystery of the pyramids,” said Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of the HIP Institute that is participating in the project.
“A similar attempt was made 30 years ago, but this is the first project at a global level using cutting-edge technology to look inside the pyramids.”
One of the pyramids to be examined is that of Pharaoh Khufu, whose burial treasure and body have never been found.
While many attempts have been made, no previous missions have been able to sufficiently explain how the megastructures were built.
The same technologies to be used on the pyramids could assist the search King Tutankhamun’s tomb for Queen Nefertiti’s burial chamber. Egypt has already approved the use of radars to search for the ancient Queen’s final resting place.
Back in September this year, a group of archaeologists examined King Tutankhamun’s Egyptian tomb and found evidence of two previously undiscovered rooms, which they hope could hold Queen Neferiti’s burial chamber.
