A man of many talents, Churchill was a shining Knight, a protector and fierce leader during Britain’s darkest hours. Already an accomplished writer and journalist during the Boer war, he was elected into Parliament by the early age of 25, serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
His reign as Prime Minister during the 20th century has inspired movies and TV shows, most notably ‘The Darkest Hour’ which recently premiered in cinemas across Australia.
As Churchill was an interesting character, National Geographic has comprised a list of seven things you may not have known about Winston Churchill.
1. He once flashed American President Roosevelt.
Churchill didn’t care what anybody else thought of him. So much so, that he famously disrobed in front of President Roosevelt exclaiming that he had “nothing to hide.”
2. He loved his cat, Jock
Churchill owned a ginger cat named Jock, who stayed with him until his death in 1965. Churchill requested that after his death, a ginger coloured cat named Jock would always live in Chartwell.
3. It wasn’t until he went to India that Churchill started liking whiskey
Churchill was a notorious fan of alcohol, famously stating, “I have made it a rule of my life never to drink non-alcoholic drinks between meals.” However, he didn't become a fan of whiskey until he travelled to India and became acquainted with Johnnie Walker. His favourite way to drink whiskey? With soda.
4. Churchill didn’t like Gandhi
Churchill didn’t like autonomous rule in India. He developed a particular distaste for Gandhi, who he believed was “a seditious Middle Temple lawyer now posing as a fakir; a type well known in the East.”
5. Churchill received the Nobel Prize for Literature
Churchill wrote around 20 books in his lifetime. In 1953, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature while serving his second term as Prime Minister for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”
6. Churchill was always late, but hated wasting time
Churchill was never on time and was always late, despite his horrid punctuality he hated wasting time tying his shoes. Instead, he wore slippers designed to look like lace-ups.
7. He had a fondness for underwear
Churchill, according to his wife was very particular about his briefs. He Apparently only wore pink silk from the army and navy stores, his wife stated the briefs: “cost the eyes out of his head.”
