This eight-day adventure into Peru’s culture and history offers an ideal introduction to Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most spectacular archaeological sites. Take a scenic train to the famous citadel and enjoy free time to explore its many corners. Roam the Sacred Valley, taking in incredible views of the Andes. Board an early flight to Cusco, then continue to the Sacred Valley to spend two days exploring with a local guide. Tour the G Adventures-supported Parque de la Papa, or Potato Park, a network of rural agricultural communities working to preserve more than 700 species of potatoes. Learn about potato cultivation and traditional weaving, and the importance of each to Andean culture. Next, explore the Pisac ruins and visit the G Adventures-supported Sacred Valley Community Restaurant in the village of Huchuy Qosqo. Discover the pre-Inca salt pans of Las Salineras. Enjoy a traditional pachamanca-style meal. (2B, 1L, 1D)
Catch an early transfer to Ollantaytambo station and board the scenic train to Aguas Calientes. Opt to visit the town’s hot springs, butterfly house, or botanical garden. (1B)
Enjoy a guided tour of the Machu Picchu ruins. Then explore the site on your own or hike to the Inca Bridge. Later, return to Cusco by train. (1B)
Explore historic Cusco, with options to visit museums or go white-water rafting or paragliding. This evening, glimpse the night sky through the telescopes of the Cusco planetarium. (1B)
Fly back to Lima for our final evening. Depart at any time the next day. (2B)
