Tyrone Turner

Tyrone Turner is an award-winning photojournalist whose assignments have taken him from Brazil to Baghdad. His work has appeared in national and international publications such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and the Los Angeles Times. A contributing photographer for National Geographic magazine, he has produced stories on a wide range of subjects, including the disappearing wetlands of Louisiana; the coasts of the United States; Brazil's maroon people, the quilombos; and a cover story on energy efficiency and conservation. With a connection to New Orleans since childhood, Tyrone contributed to National Geographic magazine's special issue on Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and collaborated with the Nat Geo Proof blog on still and multimedia stories about New Orleans for the ten-year anniversary of Katrina. Turner was also part of the National Geographic team covering the Gulf Oil Spill in 2010 as well as National Geographic Explorer Bill Saturno's discovery of Maya paintings in Guatemala in 2012. He has been named a Best of Photojournalism award-winner by the National Press Photographer’s Association and also earned recognition from the Pictures of the Year competition. Turner has joined National Geographic Expeditions for a number of years, including a trip along the Atlantic coast of South America, and lived in Recife and Salvador in northeastern Brazil for two years. Tyrone enjoys sharing his passion for photography and has also taught at National Geographic Photo Camps for youth from underserved regions of the United States and around the world.
